Short range¶
If you are experiencing a limited operating range with your remote, please follow these steps to diagnose and resolve the issue:
Try replacing the batteries¶
Your remote's batteries may be low. Even if the LED indicator still flashes, there may not be enough power to send a strong signal.
Try replacing them by following our how-to videos.
Replacing the batteries can solve many problems, especially if one remote from a two-pack has short range while the other works fine.
Do you have another known working remote, such as the original (OEM) one?¶
To determine if the issue is with the remote or your garage door motor, test another known working remote.
-
If the other remote works well: The issue is likely with the new remote.
-
If both remotes have short range: The issue is likely with the motor unit or interference.
What if all remotes have a short range?¶
If all remotes are experiencing short range, consider these common external factors:
-
LED Light bulbs
Generic LED bulbs can cause interference. Try unscrewing the bulb to see if the remote works.
If that was the problem, replace it with a standard incandescent or Garage Door Opener compatible LED.
Tip
In addition to LED bulbs, devices such as Wi-Fi routers and even household appliances can emit radio frequency signals that interfere with your garage door opener.
-
Antenna
Ensure the thin antenna wire hanging from the motor unit is not tucked inside the housing. Try extending it or repositioning it.
Note: Metal garage doors can block signals, you may need an external antenna extension.
-
Area RF interference
Is there strong RF (radio frequency) interference in your neighborhood (e.g., nearby radio towers or military bases)?
This can be a problem, especially if you're using older systems. See this article on cbc.ca for more explanation.
-
Receiver logic board
The logic board can wear out or fail due to external factors like lightning strikes or power surges. If all other checks fail, you may need a garage door repair professional to investigate this possibility further.
